"People exceptionally talented in the Communication theme generally find it easy to put their thoughts into words. They are good conversationalists and presenters."
- Gallup CliftonStrengths® Themes Quick Reference Guide -

Burnout Concern

In times of dramatic change, those with Communication® talents can be especially helpful in sharing information and meaningful stories. At the same time, with so much to share there are risks of pushing them toward burnout in the following ways,

  • They may tire of always being the sole spokesperson or constructing newsletter after newsletter.

  • They may become frustrated in trying to get their well-constructed message out among the cacophony of competing newsletters, blogs, presentations, and video; particularly when change is occurring not just in their company, industry, or region.

  • Those with Communication® talents often like time to prepare the "perfect" story or message. In times of rapid change, time isn't always available. Being rushed could cause emotional duress that could build toward burnout.

Addressing Burnout

As a leader or teammate you can help your Communication®-talented colleagues avoid frustration and burnout through the following actions:

  • Consider partnering people with this theme with others who might be able to shape the tone or goal of each communication; for example:
    • A partnership with someone with Command® talents could help shape an advocacy message. This partnership may also take some of the "out front" work off your Communication-talented team member if they prefer developing written messages.
    • Partnering with someone who has Analytical® talents can ensure a message is data-informed and can stand up to scrutiny.
    • In times of change, it's often important to share emotionally-aware messages. For these types of communication, consider partnering with someone with Empathy® talents.

  • Provide as much lead time as possible. Many with Communication® talents need time to construct and perfect their message; especially if they want to ensure it's memorable among the intended audience.

  • Be clear on the message and the essential information. By providing a focus, those with Communication® talents can hone in on building messages and stories around the most critical information that needs to reach your audience.
As with coaching any individual, their combined set of talent themes will effect how their Communication® talents show up, and how to best manage them. As a beginning, next time you check-in with them, ask,
What message is most important for you to share right now?
